From Rocky Top to Carrot Top: Derek Dooley heads to Dallas

According to Rowan Kavner of DallasCowboys.com, Derek Dooley will become the Dallas Cowboys new Wide Receiver coach

Dooley, who was a position coach alongside Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett for two years with the Dolphins, will reportedly get the job after interviewing with Garrett. Dooley was the tight ends coach and Garrett was the quarterbacks coach in Miami for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

While the majority of Cowboys staff watched the Senior Bowl practices at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, most of Garrett’s time in Mobile, Ala., was spent interviewing potential position coaches, including Dooley. The Cowboys still need to fill positions for running backs coach and tight ends coach, and the leading candidates for those positions appear to be Sam Gash and Wes Phillips, respectively.

After raising eyebrows with Jon Gruden-related hires, beginning with Bill Callahan and including Monte Kiffin, Rod Marinelli and Rich Bisaccia, Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones appears to be tossing his uncomfortable head coach a bone or two.

Dooley at least has ties to Garrett. They were position coaches together in Miami.

Jerry in damage control with Garrett?

Jones is committed to the next season with Garrett, but he has his bet hedged. Like an overbearing parent that goes too far in controlling his kid’s life, Jones is now making obvious overtures to curb any potential pouting or acting out.

Maybe he will pat Garrett on his behind or scrub the red Brillo pad on his head and say, “Here’s a few bucks. Go get yourself a nice running backs coach. Daddy loves ya, buddy.”

chuggabugAnd so the NFL’s answer to TLC’s Honey Boo Boo reality show keeps us on the edge of our collective seat. What will the backwoods billionaire do next? (And could someone please put closed captions under everything he says?)

Jerry Jones’ management style reminds me of the Wacky Racers’ Luke and Blubber Bear in their Arkansas Chuggabug. He steers with his feet and his eyes at half-mast.

Every time he drives the team into another ditch, he could quote Hillbilly Luke: “I zigged when I shoulda zagged.”
