Amani Toomer prefers Romo

Amani Toomer once benefited from Eli Manning passes. When he was lining up against the Cowboys; however, he may have been looking with longing eyes towards the Cowboys' sideline and another gun-slinger, of sorts—QB Tony Romo.

At least that is what Toomer's statement on Sirius radio might lead one to believe. According to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post, this is what went down on the radio:

“Tony Romo is probably — if you look at him statistically — he's probably the best quarterback in the NFC East,” Toomer said on Sirius/XM NFL Radio, according to NFL.com. “I mean, you look at Eli Manning and what he does in the fourth quarter. But you talk about consistency — talk about 31 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. That guy can play."

Toomer will find himself in a firestorm of controversy with an opinion like that, even among Cowboys fans. The only lightning rod in Dallas/Fort Worth bigger than Tony Romo is Jerry Jones.

In QB arguments, January matters

I believe, talent-wise, Toomer is dead on. Romo is the better athlete. He makes plays Eli could not make. He improvises as well as anyone in the game. But consistency and coming up big at the crucial moment…

Eli, hands down.

Which is partly why Eli added another Super Bowl ring to the one he won with Toomer as a teammate while Romo's Cowboys spent the another offseason saying "what if" and deflecting all those "why not" questions.

Yes, Tony Romo can play, but until he plays—and plays well— deep into January, Toomer isn't likely to get a lot of support in his opinion on the matter.

Gene has been an avid Dallas Cowboys fan for nearly five decades, which amounts to just about his entire life. The only time he was not a Cowboys fan was that brief period at the beginning of his life, when he didn't have all his baby teeth and could not yet say "Cowboys." As soon as quit slobbering, he started hollering, "Go Cowboys!"
