I think Wade Phillips is one of those people for whom the consolation prize is not such a bad thing. I agree that it doesn't necessarily take a rah-rah.. in your face personality to succeed as a head coach in the NFL. It does take a guy who will never take solace in statistics and who will never wallow in self-pity or offer excuses.

If the coach is always ready, after every loss, with a list of "things we beat them on;" if he has his "I am proud of the way we...." speech prepared; if he is satisfied with just trying real hard and losing; then, the tone is set for the team, and so are the expectations.

Wade has proven himself a fine defensive coordinator. However, not every great soldier makes a great General. NFL history is replete with examples of the Peter Principle at work.

I SO agree on the confusion with Jerry. He is driven and determined and committed. He just won't set ego aside until it is absolutely necessary (see Parcells).

Wow! All I can say is. Amen!

I'm curious of your take. Football is a tough sport and often tough coaches are successful working with tough men. I happen to like tough coaches. I'd love Bill Cower on the Cowboy sideline. But, I don't think it’s a lack of "toughness" that is the problem with Wade. Tough, doesn't equal disciplined, focused, inspiring, persuasive, trusted. Tony Dungee and Tom Laundry, among others, weren't total jerks as leaders but they had the above list in spades.

I think you nailed it with... "The problem is his laissez-faire approach to leadership. The problem is his penchant for over-celebrating minor victories and down-playing major losses. The problem is his tendency to become defensive, when he should become determined."

He doesn't even seem to want to take charge and hold people accountable for their performance. He seems to be the chief encourager and excuse maker. Which is great if you’re signing up friends… but we need a head coach for a professional football team.

I don’t get it. Would a person as successful as Jerry Jones allow people on a team he was in charge of to get by with what Wade allows the people on his team to get by with? Would Jerry have tolerated the same level of performance in the people who built the stadium as Wade allows on the field? Can you build that stadium walking around telling everyone that answers to you “almost”, “good try”, "ya dang near got that roof to work", "we will just have to wait and see if the scoreboard lights up cause ya never know", "We will just do our best, try and build it and hope it works out" "????

I just don’t get why Jerry allows in his head coaches what I can’t imagine him allowing in the team if he were actually the Head Coach. He just confuses me.
