Christie's Cowboys

Christie’s Cowboys

In a recent talk to students at Samsell Upper Elementary School, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie revealed something that could be pretty damaging to a politician in New Jersey. He said his favorite NFL team is the hated Dallas Cowboys!

The following is from Kevin Patra, care of NFL.com:

While talking to students at Samsel Upper Elementary School on Tuesday, New Jersey’s governor, Chris Christie, revealed his favorite sports teams. Those teams included the New York Mets, Knicks, Rangers and…

“…my favorite football team is not the New York Giants, it’s not the New York Jets and it’s not thePhiladelphia Eagles, get ready now, my favorite football team are the Dallas Cowboys – which by the way is not the smartest thing for the governor of New Jersey to want to be is a fan of the Dallas Cowboys,” Christie said.

For a man with an insurmountable lead in every poll for re-election, we’re guessing it’s not the dumbest confession of all time either.

Christie explained to the students why he didn’t choose one of the local teams to root for when growing up.

“I was a big fan when I was your age,” he said. “I was a big fan of Roger Staubach who was the quarterback for theCowboys back then. And the Giants and the Jets pretty much stunk when I was a kid and my father was a Giants fan and I used to remember watching him when I was eight, nine years old and every Sunday he would watch the Giants and yell at the TV set. I used to think to myself why would I want to root for a team that makes you angry?”

The 70s is my favorite era of Cowboys football. Roger Staubach, Tom Landry, the DoomsDay Defense…That happens to be the same Cowboys team that drew in the young, impressionable—and apparently front-runner loving band wagoner—Chris Christie.

Patra, maybe tongue in cheek, reached the same conclusion I immediately came to when I saw the title of his story:

Clearly, Christie is trying to line up those Texas votes for a potential presidential run in 2016.

Mixing a calculated honest confession with political savvy while maintaining that “aw shucks” twinkle in his eye tells you something about the man that went from GOP hero at the RNC convention to goat after his post-Sandy love affair with Obama, right before the election.

According to a January 2013 article in USA Today, the childhood hero Christie and I share, the great Roger Staubach, is a Christie fan:

Among Christie’s donors: His boyhood idol Roger Staubach. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback donated $3,800, according to the PolitickerNJ blog.

Roger the Dodger’s contribution notwithstanding, Christie is still in my doghouse, Cowboys’ fan or not. There are things I like about him, to be sure. He seems to have a little street fighter in him and he is willing to anger constituents or friends if the cause, in his view, is right.

But I don’t trust an Obama hugger, I don’t care if it did mean faster relief and a quicker rebuild of the Boardwalk.

His actions then were self-serving when there was a much bigger cause to which he should have committed himself.

Besides, I am leery of the man who chooses to cheer for his father’s nemesis. That he chose the very team his father would have hated most tells me he was either a brat or a rebel. Disloyalty seems to be a natural part of his make up.

So, I say, “Go, Cowboys! And go away, Chris. Get your own team.”
