I am sure you mean "wins," and I cannot disagree there, my friend. Still, the totality of the record, the incredible length of the run, the overall consistency of the team, and the magical way they played the game with those bigger-than-life personalities...it's why we care today.

You have to compare him to both, really, since he is both. The fact that one takes on tact another the other doesn't mean they cannot and should not be compared.

If he wins a couple Super Bowls, yeah. Don't see him rivaling the winning season streaks or the 12 conference championship appearances. But what Cowboys fan would complain if he did?

one more thought. Jerry still has 9 years to close ground on MLS. If he can add a couple of Super Bowl wins in that span, then it would make for an even more interesting comparison.

it's very hard to compare Jones to Murchison because Murchison was basically a passive owner which is great considering who he left in charge of the football operations. So you have to look at Jones and Tex Schramm for a more realistic comparison because Tex was the owner of the franchise in every way that mattered.
There are many categories in the Jones/Schramm comparison that are fairly even.

1. Ability to choose a head coach - Think about this one. Both owners hired great coaches who each won 2 Super Bowls. I know Jerry takes a lot of heat for hiring a bunch of knuckleheads afterward, but Jerry didn't have the benefit of a calm steady force at head coach in Tom Landry to work with like Tex did. Jerry had Jimmy "no more than 5 years anywhere" Johnson. Can you think of a reason if Landry and Jones were contemporaries that they couldn't have worked together for 29 years? The fact that Landry could work for a ruthless jerk like Schramm says a lot.

2. Vision - Schramm built the Cowboys and Jerry built the greatest sports arena in the world. Along the way they both have been instrumental in the growth of the league. Both thought outside of the box.

3. Talent acquisition - Jones of course gets no credit for acquiring talent for those great 90s team. Jimmy does. However, Schramm wasn't the guy finding talent in those days. Gil Brandt was.

I'm sure theres more to say on the subject, but I am starting to realize this is too much for a comment box. I guess I will close by saying that Murchison gets credit for everything under his watch (although he wasn't as active as Jones). You have to judge Jones the same way. What all has happened on his watch (although he is more active than Murch). I agree the numbers say that Murchison's era was better, however I am betting that 90% of the teams in the NFL would gladly take the last 20 years of Cowboys history. Having said that, Dang! I'm tired of 12 consecutive playoff-win less seasons!
